Activities, trips and nature

Discover the nature and green side of Wiesbaden as well as exciting and interesting activities in the city.

Spa park, gardens and boat rental

Together with Wiesbaden's famous Kurhaus, the Kurpark was created between 1808 and 1814. Stroll through the park in the style of an English landscape garden and enjoy the different colours and colours of the sometimes exotic flowers depending on the season. In the 20th century, the garden and park were also extended by the new construction of the spa house.

Right next to the main entrance you will find the well-known "Nizza-Place", framed by the pillars of the Kurhaus, here you will find the entrance to the Kurhaus. Another special feature is the ice cellar hill, its underground corridors and rooms were already used for ice storage in front of the spa house and since the extension of the spa house and park it belongs to the garden landscape.

Besides the many different flowers, plants and trees you will also find some monuments in the park. Two old 18th-century columns of the Kurhaus at the entrance are reminiscent of the old Kurhaus, a bust in honour of Dostoyevsky commemorates the author of the novel "The Player" and a monument was also dedicated to the writer Gustav Freytag.  Of course you will also find a bust of Wiesbadens Feridnand-Hey' l, the first spa director.

You also have the possibility to rent pedal boats and much more at the Kurpark pond.

The Neroberg - Wiesbadens local mountain

The Neroberg, which is one of the most popular excursion destinations in Wiesbaden, offers probably the most beautiful view over the city of Wiesbaden. Especially in the evening hours, the round Neroberg Temple (1851) on the Panorama Terrace provides a romantic atmosphere.

The Neroberg with its 245 metres of altitude is Wiesbaden's local mountain, where the Neroberg wine also grows and a unique water ballast run leads up the mountain. The technology of the Nerobergbahn has not been changed since 1888 and is therefore considered a technical cultural heritage. Within 3.5 minutes on a length of 438.5 meters with an incline of about 26%, you will be taken up the mountain with a total speed of 7.3 km/h.

A water ballast track consists of two cars, one of which always descends down the mountain and one drives up the mountain. The car driving down is filled with up to 7,000 litres of water and pulls the car driving up on a steel cable.

What else you can do at and on the Neroberg...

  • On the Neroberg you will also find a forest adventure trail that makes the walk more active and interesting, especially for children and families. There are two walks (one 2.3 km and one 3.3 km) with up to 16 different stops where you can learn about the forests and their inhabitants.
  • The Greek chapel from the years 1847 to 1855 was at that time the resting place for the Russian Grand Duchess Elisabeth Michailovna, until today the Orthodox worship services of the community of Wiesbaden are still held in the actually Russian church.
  • You can visit the "Leichtweißhöhle" a cave in the Nero valley and learn how its namesake lived here for several years in pure nature. The cave is open from April to October Wednesday 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., Fridays from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. and Sundays from 1:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.
  • The climbing forest offers a lot of adventure and fun for young and old on its 6,000 m². Due to the different difficulty levels of the 15 courses there is something for everyone.
  • The open-air swimming pool Opelbad is also located on the Neroberg, only here you can swim above the roofs of Wiesbaden.

Especially during the summer months, events take place on the mountain and its adventure trough. A visit to the Neroberges is always worthwhile and who knows what you will discover?

Freudenberg Castle

As a villa, Freudenberg Castle was built in 1904 in the middle of a park. In the beginning, the artist couple who had commissioned the castle lived here. After a short time, the castle became an officer's casino for the French army during World War I and a casino for the American forces during World War II. It was not until the 1990s that it was taken over and renovated by the Gesellschaft Natur & Kunst gemeinnütziger e. V. (Nature & Art Non-Profit Association).

To this day, the castle is still a "field of experience for the development of the senses" with many attractions for exploring your senses. In the DunkleBar, for example, you have breakfast every second Sunday and explore your senses during the dark. There are also several seminars and workshops that will change your perception. These are just a few examples of the possibilities that await you at Schloss Freudenberg.
